Visiting Colleges

College Visits

One of the best parts of being a college counselor is being able to visit different college campuses and experience their unique atmospheres and specialized programs firsthand. Every year, we visit at least a dozen of college campuses all over the United States, and even abroad, to get to know each school's academic and social atmosphere.

We learn interesting facts, like how at Capilano University in Canada, students can earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business while also obtaining a Commercial Pilot’s License. By getting to know different colleges across the country, we ensure that our students will have the best college list to match their unique wants and needs.

Not only is visiting college campuses critical to being an expert college consultant, it is also a critical part of the college application process. As a parent of a prospective student, it is important to evaluate colleges both online and in person to ensure they are a great fit for your child.

How We Can Help

At Thompson College Consulting, we provide a preliminary college list curated for each of our client’s needs, with tools to research. Our expertise allows us to help students not only identify which schools to visit but also make the most of their time on campus, ensuring they find the best fit for their academic goals and community.

We help families make the most out of their college visits. By spending time researching academic offerings and student organizations with us prior to visits, students are able to maximize their time on each campus. Here are some of our favorite questions to ask while visiting colleges.

Some of our favorite resources to use while researching colleges

    • What are some unique programs or opportunities at this school?

    • Where do most students live? What percentage of students live on campus?

    • What does a typical weekend look like for students here?

    • What surprised you most about your experience at this school?

    • What other schools did you consider, and why did you choose this one over the others?

    • How do students typically travel between campus and the airport?

    • What has been the best part of your experience at this school?

As you visit different college campuses with your kid, make sure to encourage them to take notes and pay attention to the students who attend there. Is this a place they will be able to thrive socially and academically?
